Africa

“The children had life-changing injuries as a result of their mother’s lack of access to education, or the opportunity to learn one of the main languages of Kenya. It had a profound effect on me. I will do whatever I can to help people anywhere access educational opportunities, in whatever form that takes.”

Ross Cockburn, Founder & Trustee, Reusing IT

*Digital Exclusion: a modern scourge that should never have happened

Most of our work in Africa is via our partnership with The Turing Trust, who install IT labs in schools in Malawi. Given that access to education is at the heart of our mission, we maximise our impact by providing a high volume of devices to The Turing Trust for their work. They are making a measurable difference to young people’s education and life prospects by providing equal digital opportunities, and we are one of the Trust’s main donors of refurbished devices. Since 2013 we have supplied on average 1000 devices per year for schools in Malawi.

Reusing IT’s work started in Africa in the late 1990s, and in addition to our partnership with the Turing Trust, we respond to direct requests from local charities, having built up a deep network over many years of working with organisations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Sierra Leone, to name a few.
